CBF Trail Map

Suzanne sent us this map of the riding trails at the farm where she kept her horse in the 1980s. This map is a detail of the Barber Reservation area. She writes, "There were many trails for horse-back riding, but not many of my friends knew them all. I drew the CBFTrail map (black map) for the other borders at the farm so they would know where they could ride. The green map of the Barber Reservation was for a hunter pace. The riders followed a prescribed course including jumping the numbered jumps in the order indicated on the map. A hunting pace is the pace it took for fox hunters to navigate through a course. It is determined by the trail's size and footing. The local fox hunt would follow a scent sprayed on a pre-determined route."

Treasure Map

The other day I received an envelope from an anonymous person in the Philadelphia area. Inside was this map along with the following note: "My sister sent this to me along with the latest pictures of her kids. No explanation about the map, but I hope Matt found the treasure."

Recycling

Mike sent us this collection of maps that he rescued from a paper recycling dumpster in the Boston area. We know almost nothing of these maps other than the second one features Grimesby Roylott, a character from a Sherlock Holmes story, and the map featured above reminds us of a video game.

Crash

Tony sent us a set of three maps recently. I could ask him for more information, but I've decided to embrace the simplicity of his explanations included on a post-it note. Look for the other two maps later this week. "Directions to the scene of a crash: trolley vs. pedestrian."

Hypothetical Exhibition

Jeff drew these maps in a sketchbook to plan out a hypothetical exhibition of his artwork. The space would include a plethora of work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and poetry. There was no specific space in mind for the show, but rather Jeff allowed the work to determine the layout of the space. The longest room pictured above would include some very large abstract paintings while the hallway would feature pages from his sketchbook. As an artist, Jeff uses map imagery quite a bit in his work.

Machinebook

Ross sent us this diagram documenting his site, Machinebook. Machinebook was started by Ross and his partner, Lotte Rubbish, in 2007. Ross writes, "we had expressed our feelings for each other but still lived a significant distance away. Because we could not share physical space, we created a shared world in Machinebook. It is a mental space where our brains mingle." The map is an intentionally puzzling diagram of the site where each word represents an HTML file on the server. Ross continues, "I drew the map because a friend of Lotte's requested one. The labyrinthine construction of the site was driving him crazy. Typically, I created a map that is possibly even more confusing than the site itself."

Carbon 14

This map was drawn by Ross's friend, Sergeant Slapnuts, during a planning session for a high school project. The project involved creating a text-based Role Playing Game called Carbon 14. "The Beachfront" is where the main character started out after washing up on the shore in a coffin. One of the first steps after reaching the shore was to trick a giant turtle using some glass beads found in a nearby pool of water. Ross writes, "Text-based online games had gone out of favor even by the time we were working on Carbon 14, but there is still something powerful about MUDs, MOOs and the like. The feelings of power, immersive fantasy and fun I experienced still stand apart from the high-tech graphics and visual focus that have taken over gaming."

Drawing

One last map for today - technically more of a drawing than a map. It does stick with our theme of maps to places that don't actually exist, however.

Entertainment Center

Mfwic sent us this great diagram he made for the wiring of his entertainment center in 1999. he details some of the features below:
- Crude dual-tuner time-shifting setup with 2 VCR's.
- One of the earliest forms of a Home Theatre PC, a Mac Centris 660AV.
- Able to capture Playstation game footage via VCR A.
- The DVD player was a Divx player, and I don't mean the Divx CODEC, it played the now defunct Divx format DVD's.

Dream House

Purple Wyrm writes, "This is a map of a house/apartment I've occasionally dreamed about - coincidentally drawn only a few days before I discovered the Hand Drawn Maps Association (drawn on August 1 2008). The dreams have never been particularly pleasant ones, but the architecture has stuck in my head - possibly for that reason. I don't think it's my house, I usually seem to be looking after it for someone, which may explain why I don't know who or what lurks behind the dark windows on the veranda, what lies on the garden side of the skylight room, and why there's a hatstand, a piece of furniture I have absolutely no use for."
